About security

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. Our bank has a 256-bit encryption key that protects the communication channel. A company called VeriSign allows CIB Bank to use the 256-bit key to secure TLS-based encryption. Currently, 90% of the world’s e-commerce uses this encryption method. The browser program used by the customer uses TLS to encrypt the cardholder’s data before sending it, so it is sent to CIB Bank in encrypted form, so it cannot be interpreted by unauthorized persons.

Questions and answers about online card payments

Is it possible to pay with co-branded cards?

PAYMENT PROCESS

How does the online payment process for online payments work?

The customer initiates the payment on the merchant’s / service provider’s website after choosing the bank card payment method, as a result of which he is transferred to the payment page of the Bank with a secure communication channel. To make a payment, you must provide your card number, expiration date, and the 3-digit verification code on the signature strip on the back of the card. You initiate the transaction, from then on the card goes through real-time authorization, within which the authenticity, coverage and purchase limits of the card data are checked. If all the data is sufficient to continue the transaction, the amount to be paid will be blocked on your card by the bank holding the account (card issuer). The amount will be debited (deducted) within a few days, depending on the bank holding the account.

How is online card shopping different from traditional shopping?

We distinguish between Card Present and Card not Present transactions. The Card Present transaction is performed using a POS terminal device. After removing the card and entering the PIN code, the terminal will contact the cardholder’s bank, via the authorization center, and via the VISA or MasterCard network, depending on the type of card and the card issuer. Validity and coverage checks (authorization) take place here. Going back on the former route, the POS terminal (or the merchant) will receive approval or rejection. The buyer signs the receipt. A Card not Present is a transaction in which the credit card is not physically present. This includes transactions by letter, telephone or electronic means (Internet), for which the customer (cardholder) initiates the transaction by entering the card details requested on a secure (256-bit encrypted) payment page. You will receive a so-called an authorization number that is the same as the number on the paper-based receipt.

What does the reservation mean?

The transaction is immediately followed by a reservation (blocking) when the bank becomes aware of it, as the actual data must first be received for the actual debit, which takes a few days and below which the purchased amount could be spent again. Therefore, with the reservation, the money bought or withdrawn is separated and placed under the reservation. The reserved amount belongs to the account balance, i.e. it bears interest, but once again it cannot be spent. The reservation ensures the rejection of transactions that are no longer covered, although the account balance would in principle still allow this.

FAILED PAYMENTS AND ACTION TO BE TAKEN

In what cases can a transaction fail?

Usually a payment order not accepted by the card issuing bank (i.e. where the customer received the card); but in the case of the use of a bank card, this may also be due to the fact that due to a telecommunication or IT error, the request for authorization will not reach the bank issuing the card.

Card error

The card is not suitable for online payments.
The use of the card on the Internet is prohibited by the bank holding the account.
The use of cards is prohibited.
The card details (card number, expiration date, code on the signature strip) were entered incorrectly.
The card has expired.

Invoice error

There is no collateral to complete the transaction.
The amount of the transaction exceeds the purchase limit of the card.

Connection error

The line may have been broken during the transaction. Please try again.
The transaction failed due to a timeout. Please try again.

Technical error

If you did not return to the merchant / service provider from the payment page, the transaction will fail.
If you return from the payment page, but the browser returns to the payment page using “back”, “reload” or “refresh”, the system will automatically reject your transaction for security reasons.

What to do if the payment procedure fails?

In each case, a transaction ID is generated from the transaction, which we recommend to record. If a transaction is declined from your bank during the payment attempt, please contact your account-holding bank.

Why contact the bank holding the account in case of payment failure?

During the card check, the bank holding the account (issuing the card) notifies the bank of the merchant (acceptor) collecting the amount whether the transaction can be completed. The accepting bank may not disclose confidential information to a customer of another bank, only the bank identifying the cardholder has the right to do so.

However, what does it mean if I received an SMS from my bank to reserve / block the amount, but the merchant / service provider indicates that the payment was unsuccessful?

This phenomenon can occur if the card has been verified on the payment page, but you have not returned to the merchant / service provider’s website. In this case, the transaction is considered incomplete and will automatically fail. In this case, the amount will not be charged to your card and the booking will be canceled.
